Today we received this email from Harlem resident, business owner, and Harlem World Magzine (HWM) contributor Robert Pair regarding Mosquito Adulticiding:
Dear Harlem Neighbors, I hope this message finds you all in good health and high spirits.
As a Harlem business owner and fellow resident, I hold a strong commitment to the well-being and safety of our vibrant community. Today, I want to share vital information regarding an upcoming mosquito adulticiding operation in Manhattan, which directly affects us all.
Mosquito Adulticiding Details:
- Date: Thursday, September 14, 2023
- Time: Between 8:30 PM and 6:00 AM the following morning
- Weather Contingency: In case of adverse weather conditions, the operation will be rescheduled to Monday, September 18, 2023.
Location: Mosquito control trucks will be dispatched to spray pesticides in designated areas of Manhattan. While specific addresses are unavailable, I urge all residents in the affected zones to pay close attention to the details provided here.
Pesticide Information: Please rest assured that the Health Department will employ very low concentrations of Anvil® 10+10, Duet®, or MERUS® 3. It’s important to note that the risks associated with these pesticides are minimal for both our community members and their cherished pets. While individuals sensitive to spray ingredients may experience short-term eye or throat irritation or a rash, I want to reassure you that the overall risk is low. Those with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions.
Safety Measures: To ensure the safety of you and your loved ones during and after the spraying, please adhere to the following guidelines:
During Spraying:
- Whenever possible, stay indoors.
- You may keep air conditioners running. Although not strictly necessary, you might choose to close air conditioner vents or use the recirculate function.
After Spraying:
- Thoroughly wash your skin and clothing that may have been exposed to pesticides with soap and water.
- Always wash fruits and vegetables with water.
Preventing Mosquito Exposure: Please remember that the most effective way to control mosquitoes is by eliminating standing water. Additionally, here are some tips to help reduce mosquito exposure:
- Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (not suitable for children under 3), or products containing the active ingredient IR3535.
- Ensure your windows have screens, and promptly repair or replace screens with tears or holes.
- Eliminate any instances of standing water on your property and dispose of containers that can collect water. It’s crucial to note that standing water is a violation of the New York City Health Code.
- Maintain clean and well-draining roof gutters.
- Keep swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs clean and chlorinated. If not in use, keep them empty or covered. Drain water that collects in pool covers.
Reporting Standing Water: If you encounter any instances of standing water within our community, please report them promptly by calling 311 or visiting nyc.gov/health/wnv.
More Information: For additional details about West Nile virus, please call 311 or visit nyc.gov.
The safety and well-being of our community members are our top priorities. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we diligently work to protect our beloved Harlem neighborhood from potential West Nile virus risks.
If you have any questions, concerns, or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out by replying to this email.
Thank you for your continuous support and commitment to the health and prosperity of our Harlem community.
Warm regards,
Robert Pair, Harlem Lofts
