CCNY’s Spitzer School Of Architecture Granted $1.5 Million By Mellon Foundation For New Center

The Mellon Foundation has granted City College of New York a substantial $1.5 million over three years.

This funding will fuel the establishment of the innovative Place, Memory, and Culture Incubator (PMCI) within the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture.

The PMCI will center on community collaborations and initiatives in Harlem that blend built environment design with humanities, with a strong focus on social justice. CCNY envisions the center as a space fostering interaction among the college community to generate more inclusive and authentic histories. Vincent G. Boudreau, CCNY’s President, highlighted the project’s acknowledgment of the architectural school’s historical role in Harlem and commitment to democratizing access to its cultural and physical heritage.

Anticipated to reshape the engagement of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design students with communities, the PMCI is set to offer design studios that explore heritage preservation and envision resilient cultural and spatial futures.

The Mellon Foundation’s grant coincides with the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative’s $2.7 million support for clean energy across 48 arts institutions. Additionally, August witnessed the EPA’s release of $20 billion in grants for adaptive reuse and decarbonization projects. In the previous month, researchers at Syracuse School of Architecture secured a $100,000 grant for studying the racial wealth gap in the United States.
