Harlem Senator Cordell Cleare is proud to announce that she has successfully protected her district from the negative impact of charter schools in the state budget.
The proposed state budget included a provision that would have eliminated the charter cap in New York City, potentially leading to a proliferation of charter schools in the district. Senator Cleare recognized the potential harm that this could cause to her constituents and worked tirelessly to ensure that the provision was removed from the final budget.
The oversaturation of Charter Schools in the area harms our public school system by resulting in less financial support, decreased resources, and limited space, programs, and services for traditional public school students, largely due to forced and mandated co-locations. To address this issue, Senator Cleare, who is strongly opposed to charter schools, fought to limit the number of surrendered, revoked, or terminated charters that could be reissued in the district to only 14 out of a total of 22, effectively mitigating the harms caused by the oversaturation of charter schools in the area.
Senator Cleare also pushed for a provision that prohibits the opening of new charter schools in a community school district where more than 55 percent of students already attend charter schools. This provision will help to ensure that existing traditional public schools are not adversely impacted by the growth of charter schools.
Senator Cleare’s efforts to protect her district from the negative effects of charter schools demonstrate her commitment to ensuring that all students in her community have access to high-quality public education.
