Egypt has perhaps contributed more to the world than any other country, historically speaking.
Many of the things we enjoy and use today were invented there, like toothpaste for example. There is nowhere else like Egypt on the planet today, mainly because of the large number of historical and ancient monuments that stand there, still intact. In addition to places like the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, you can also visit museums and see perfectly preserved mummies and ancient Egyptian artifacts.
This post will explore this topic in more detail, explaining six of the most fascinating things that you need to see when in Egypt.
Pyramids of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza are perhaps Egypt’s premier tourist attraction. Millions of people from all over the world visit the nation just to see them each year. Surrounding the Pyramids of Giza, there are many other interesting historical monuments and sites, too. If you want to see all of them, then organizing a tour of Egypt with Encounters Travel is something that’s definitely worth considering. The main advantage of taking a tour is that you get to learn about the places you’re visiting from your guide. One thing that needs to be made clear is that you should never, under any circumstances, pay a random tout to take you on a tour. Only ever go on tours with professional agencies.
The Sphinx
The Sphinx is a stone’s throw from the Pyramids of Giza. If you take a tour with a professional company, then they’ll probably take you there after you have seen the pyramids. The Sphinx is an incredible monument, unlike anything else in the entire country. Most people who visit it are shocked at how large it really is, especially when you consider that it was entirely carved by hand, thousands of years ago. The Sphinx’s age is not entirely clear, which adds to its mystique. Usually, your tickets to see the Pyramids of Giza will cover you for seeing the Sphinx, too.
Abu Simbel Temples
The Abu Simbel temples are rock-cut temples, located in the village of Abu Simbel. Most historians believe it to be the most significant (and beautiful) temple commissioned during the reign of Ramesses II, one of history’s most important pharaohs. The temples were dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah. The temples were also dedicated to the deified Ramesses. Tickets to see them are very affordable and can be purchased next to the site. The Abu Simbel temples are somewhere that everybody needs to visit on their trip to Egypt. They are overlooked by many people, sadly.
Valley of the Kings
The Valley of the Kings is an area of the ancient city of Thebes where for nearly 500 years, Egyptian pharaohs were buried. It is a truly incredible place, unlike anywhere else in all of Egypt, and that’s saying a lot. You can see the tombs of some of the nation’s most famous rulers there. If you plan on visiting, then bear in mind that it can get very hot there. The weather in Egypt can be intense, to say the least. If you deal with hot weather poorly, then visit at a time of year when it’s a little cooler or take your trips in the evening.
Nile River
The Nile River is one of the most historically significant rivers in all of the world. It is, many argue, the gateway to Africa. Along the Nile, you can find various historic monuments, sites, caves, and burial grounds. Also along the Nile, you can find the fierce Nile crocodile. Because of the presence of crocodiles up and down the river, it’s essential that you do not go alone, or attempt to swim in the river. You can take tours up and down the river by boat, but make sure you are supervised by somebody who’s experienced and knows what they are doing, do not take a boat out yourself. Better yet, you can easily find an itinerary for a 10-day trip to Egypt that includes sailing the Nile with an experienced tour guide.
Luxor Museum
The Luxor Museum is one of Egypt’s best museums. It is definitely somewhere that’s worth visiting once you have seen everything else listed here. Inside the museum, you can find ancient Egyptian artifacts, as well as informative posters, guides, and boards. If you want to learn about the history of Egypt, then the Luxor Museum is somewhere that should be at the top of your list. There is really nowhere better in all of the worlds to go to than the Luxor Museum if you want to learn about Egyptian history.
Egypt is a fascinating place, that has contributed a lot to the world. If you have never visited, then why not take a trip there? All of the places listed here should be on your list of places to visit, so be sure to give them consideration.
