On May 21st, 2022, the Harlem Cultural Archives (HCA) historical society hosted a street co-naming ceremony at the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change in Central Harlem.
Remarks were made by Dean Meminger, Jr., NY1 reporter and son of basketball legend Dean Meminger, and Ydanis Rodriguez, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation.
Glenn A. Hunter, HCA Co-Executive Director, led a Conversation/Q&A with Claude Johnson – Founder and CEO of Black Fives Foundation, Inc., and author of “The Black Fives: The Epic Story of Basketball’s Forgotten Era” – about the origins of Black professional basketball.
In commemoration of the “Lasting Legacy” of the New York Renaissance (“Rens”) basketball team, the southeast corner of West 138th St. & Adam Clayton Powell Blvd., the location of the old Renaissance Ballroom, was co-named “New York Rens Court.”
The street sign was unveiled immediately following the ceremony.
