Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez stated, “The devastating impact that the end of the eviction moratorium will have on working and low-income communities is unprecedented.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of families will be left homeless.
The most impacted communities will be those of low to moderate-income, mainly the middle class, which have been historically left behind, precisely those most affected by the COVID virus.
The federal moratorium expires tomorrow, Saturday, July 31, 2021.
The New York State moratorium expires in one month, on August 31, 2021.
Although there may not be time to extend the federal moratorium before Congress goes into recess today, there is time for the New York State legislature to act as soon as possible and adopt an extension of the eviction moratorium, until at least October 31, 2021.
To act contrary would be a serious blow to New Yorkers’ hopes, that a Democratic majority in Albany would bring justice to the most disadvantaged communities in New York City and throughout this state.
It’s all hands on deck. We must extend the eviction moratorium.”
