The Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM) will commemorate the estimated 29,000 New Yorkers who have passed away from COVID-19 on March 12, 2021, through a ceremony and memorial exhibit.
The public is invited to the opening ceremony that will be held on Friday, March 12 from 5:30-6:00 pm at the Mary Bergtraum Softball Field.
The “Let Hope Light the Way” Memorial Exhibit is a student-constructed COVID-19 memorial exhibit made of lights to honor all of the New Yorkers who have passed away from COVID-19.
The lights will be arranged to spell HOPE on the baseball field under the iconic Manhattan Bridge.
The exhibit will run from Friday, March 12th, 2021, at sundown until Sunday, March 14th during the Citywide COVID Remembrance Day.
This exhibit will also kick-off the launch of our citywide “My Story: A Year of COVID” where other students from across the city will have the opportunity to submit their COVID-19 stories and experiences.
The field’s perimeter fence will be used as a canvas for “Frontline Worker Tributes.”
The ceremony and project are happening due to the generosity of the NY Presbyterian Hospital, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Shippy Foundation.
This event will be live-streamed on UASEM social media and the UASEM school website at uasem.org.
The opening ceremony Friday, March 12th 5:30 to 6:00 pm with the lighting beginning at 6 pm.
The HOPE sign will be illuminated from Friday, March 12th, 6 pm until Sunday, March 14th, 10 pm. The public and press are welcome to visit the field at any time and take photos.
The Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM), a public Career and Technical Education High School, prepares students for careers in Emergency Medicine and Cyber Security, has gained notoriety for surpassing graduating and academic performance standards, and has been even featured on Good Morning America (GMA) for producing a high number for graduates that now serve as first responders during this pandemic.
UASEM’s mission is to rethink how to prepare students for careers in emergency medicine, cybersecurity, and other public service-related careers.
