The COVID Crisis: Protect Our Seniors! I’m Calling For An Investigation Of NYS Nursing Homes

Harlem Representative Adriano Espaillat released the following statement in association to a letter he sent to New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Attorney General Letitia James.

In the letter, Harlem Rep. Espaillat urged that a comprehensive investigation into the information sharing practices and conditions of nursing homes across New York:

“The recent reports surrounding the Isabella Geriatric Center in Washington Heights underscore the seriousness of this issue,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “Thousands of families place their trust in nursing home administrators to safely care for their elderly and/or ailing loved ones, the most predisposed to COVID-19’s potentially fatal impact.

“Isabella Geriatric Center’s disregard for transparency and its fundamental failure to keep patients’ families abreast of the conditions in which their loved ones live, is unacceptable and only adds to the already intense stress brought on by this pandemic. Likewise, to keep the government agencies elected officials leading the COVID-19 response in the dark is inadmissible.

“A pandemic of this degree requires that we learn from mistakes in real-time. To ensure that the public health and intergovernmental miscarriages reported at the Isabella Geriatric Center are an isolated incident, I have asked Governor Cuomo and Attorney General James to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the conditions and information sharing practices of nursing homes across New York State.”

Congresista Adriano Espaillat solicita se investiguen hogares de ancianos del Estado de Nueva York

El congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) emitió la siguiente declaración sobre una carta que envió en conjunto al gobernador del Estado de Nueva York, Andrew M. Cuomo, y a la fiscal general, Letitia James, solicitando una investigación exhaustiva sobre las prácticas y condiciones de intercambio de información de los hogares de ancianos en Nueva York:

“La falta negligente de transparencia del Centro Geriátrico Isabella y su falla fundamental de mantener a las familias de los pacientes al tanto de las condiciones en que viven sus seres queridos, es inaceptable y solo se suma al estrés ya intenso provocado por esta pandemia”. Del mismo modo, es inadmisible mantener en la oscuridad a los funcionarios electos de las agencias gubernamentales que lideran la respuesta al COVID-19.

“Una pandemia de esta magnitud requiere que aprendamos de los errores en tiempo real. Para garantizar que los errores involuntarios intergubernamentales y de salud pública reportados en el Centro Geriátrico Isabella sean un incidente aislado, le he pedido al gobernador Cuomo y a la fiscal general James que inicien una investigación exhaustiva sobre las condiciones y prácticas de intercambio de información de los hogares de ancianos en todo el Estado de Nueva York”.
