A $15 million renovation to Harlem’s Montefiore Square will triple the public space in size and include upgraded features and newly-planted trees, according to city officials.
The new Montefiore Square is expected to open in 2020 after breaking ground earlier this year, the city Department of Design and Construction announced. The expansion of the public space — located at the intersection of Broadway, Hamilton Place and West 138th Street — will turn the entire intersection into a plaza.
New features of the plaza will include 19 benches, new streetlights and nearly 90 newly-planted trees that will act as a buffer between the plaza and surrounding streets, city officials said. Montefiore Square will also benefit from new plumbing that will reduce flooding at the site and a new drinking fountain.

Landscape Architect Thomas Balsley designed the new Montefiore Square, and the project had been honored by the city Public Design Commission at its annual excellence in design ceremony reports Patch.
“The award-winning redesign and expansion of Montefiore Square Park is truly going to be transformative to the growing vibrancy of West Harlem,” local City Councilmember Mark Levine said in a statement. “Montefiore Square Park has long served as an important central point for the surrounding communities who use the park but has lacked the investment to keep up with the park’s importance to West Harlem.”
The renovation is a joint effort by city agencies such as the Department of Design and Construction, the Department of Transportation and the Parks Department.
