On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, Kicked it in Heels (KIIH) hosted their Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Bagatelle, 1 Little West 12th St., NYC (just 30 minutes from Harlem).
The event has become a marquee event that promotes breast cancer awareness while celebrating survivorship.Now in its 7th year, KIIH hosted a cocktail party designed to raise funds to eradicate healthcare disparities in breast cancer and to support survivor workshops that focus on wellness, beauty, and fashion. This year thrilled they honored Nicole Cosby, a Technology Marketing Executive. Celebrity DJ, Kiss the Deejay spinning on the one and two, and Co-host of The View and TV personality, Sunny Hostin, hosting the evening. Guests enjoyed an open bar and passed hors d’oeuvres while helping raise funds for the breast cancer survivor support and the Kicked It In Heel’s mission.
Kicked It In Heels (KIIH) focuses on breast cancer survivors, specifically, young women and women of color. “African Americans and other minorities tend to have a worse prognosis and lower survival outcomes compared to Caucasians,” explains Dr. Janna Andrews, M.D., and Founder of KIIH. “Additionally, I felt the support in survivorship was lacking. Thankfully there are more than 3 million breast cancer survivors but that means that the need for support is more important than ever. Kicked It In Heels is committed to helping survivors reclaim their lives and find they’re ‘new normal’. Anyone who can assist in our mission is so appreciated.”
“To receive a breast cancer diagnosis, as a single, black businesswoman in her 40’s, was difficult for many reasons. The anxiety of managing the fears of my loved ones, while mapping my strategy to beat cancer as I tried to maintain the rigor of my professional and personal life was no easy feat. Yet those complexities never slowed in my recovery thanks to organizations like Kicked It In Heels that continue to support breast cancer survivors like myself. I’m honored to be recognized at this year’s fundraiser.”
Kicked It In Heels (KIIH) focuses on breast cancer survivors, specifically, young women and women of color, by providing basic information on screening and highlighting survivors’ experiences as they reclaim their normal lives. After diagnosis, we encourage lifestyle adjustments and dialogue by offering workshops focused on fitness, beauty and wellness, and we host various fundraising campaigns throughout the year to support our work. Kicked It In Heels is also a vehicle to conduct community-based studies that address healthcare disparities. KIIH is 100% committed to eradicating health care disparities in breast cancer and to promote health in survivorship.
