Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Council Transportation Committee, The New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, and environmental justice advocates announced the 4th annual Car Free Day NYC. In Honor of Earth Day, pedestrians and cyclists will be reclaiming the streets of New York City. This year’s event will run along St. Nicholas Avenue from 181st to 190th Streets in Washington Heights and on Broadway from Union Square to Times Square. This year we will see participation from all the New York City Boroughs. A multitude of events ranging from performances, dance classes, puppet-shows, and much more can be expected! Car Free Day NYC will be held on Saturday, April 27th.
“I would like to thank Mayor De Blasio, Speaker Cory Johnson, Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, and advocates for being a part of this great initiative, said Council Member Rodriguez. “During this important event we will be celebrating Mother Earth, and opening up the streets for New Yorkers to enjoy. This year we will be expanding the event to all the boroughs, educating New Yorkers on the importance of sustainability and environmental justice.”
“For the fourth straight year, we are thrilled to work with Council Member Rodriguez to transform the bustling streets of Broadway and St Nicholas Avenue into havens for New Yorkers,”
“For the fourth straight year, we are thrilled to work with Council Member Rodriguez to transform the bustling streets of Broadway and St Nicholas Avenue into havens for New Yorkers,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “Whether they are out cycling or walking, New Yorkers can use Car Free Earth Day as a time to reclaim their streets, enjoy the outdoors, and indulge in the vibrant culture of their local communities. Earth Day next week is a perfect reminder of how significant sustainability is to our city and as such we encourage New Yorkers to think green and join us for our annual Weekend Walks Program—which is kicking off this Saturday.”
“DEP is proud to once again partner with DOT and New York City Council Transportation Committee Chair Ydanis Rodriguez to celebrate Car Free Earth Day and highlight how integral, and integrated, sustainability and the environment are to New York City,” said DEP Commissioner Vincent Sapienza. “New York City has some of the best drinking water in the nation and I encourage attendees to stop by one of DEP’s portable Water-On-the-Go water fountains to fill up a water bottle, take a sip, or keep their four-legged friend hydrated.”
