Walter’s World: Weekend Picks Jazz, Dance and Cabaret

This is going to be one beautiful autumn New York weekend. So why not take a ferry ride to hear and experience jazz, or see cutting edge dance downtown, then grab a late night bite cabaret style uptown. Here are a few of the many events happening around town and in our community.

Universal Temple of the Arts will present Staten Island JAZZ Festival 25 on Saturday, October 20, from 2PM until 7PM in the Music Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Jazz legend Randy Weston African Rhythms Trio will headline this silver anniversary event. In addition to Weston, the festival includes notables, Bob Cunningham, Kiane Zawadi, Leopoldo Fleming Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble, Vishnu Wood & Safari East, Danny Mixon Quartet, Betty Shirley and Taru Alexander. Local favorites include Jeannine Otis, Vinnie Ruggieri, David Jones, WaFoo, Rudi Mwongozi, Queen Tipsy, Karlus Trapp, Charles Thomas and more!

The event will celebrate everything jazz with performances showcasing the depth and breadth of jazz music, dance, song, art and spoken word.The festival will kickoff with free jazz-themed arts and cultural workshops in music, dance, vocal, poetry and Romare Bearden collage art. These workshops are geared for the entire family.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children in advance; at the door, tickets are $30 and $15 respectively. Seniors and student tickets cost $20. Group sales are available. Bistro Chez Lucienne will present the band Funk That for two late night shows on Saturday, October 20. The band will feature vocalist Kim Lovering, who has been called “a dynamic vocalist who incorporates a wide variety of styles from Funk, R&B to Rock & Pop.” Showtimes are 10pm and 1am there is no cover charge, but reservations are recommended by calling

Sobers & Godley present Revisit and MEN, Saturday, October 20th, 7:30pm and Sunday, October 21st, 2:30pm Salvatore Capezio Theater at Peridance Capezio Center 126 East 13th Street. The ambitious second New York City season will showcase the work of ten innovative emerging choreographers. Revisit onOctober 20 will feature Simone Sobers Dance, Project 44, and Sobers & Godley in repertory works by Sidra Bell (2010) a company premiere by Bradley Shelver,, and Nellie Rainwater’s world premiere. October 21, MEN is an evening of choreography by male dance makers Gierre Godley, Malcolm Low, Jeremy McQueen, Austin Diaz & Jonathan Campbell, Matthew Flatley & Robert Vail, Billy Bell, Aaron McGloin, and James Atkinson.

Former Limon dancers Betty Jones and Fritz Ludin will teach a Limon technique and repertory workshop Monday-Friday, October 22 through 26 at Peridance, 126 East 13th Street. The class offered will be an advanced Limon technique class from 10 to 11:30am, and the solo workshop from “A Choreographic Offering will take place from 11:30 am to 1pm.

Jones was a founding member of the Jose Limon Dance Company. Countless roles in the Humphrey/Limon repertory were originally created on her, including Desdemona in The Moor’s Pavane. Ludin joined the Limon Dance Company in 1963. He and Jones have staged Humphrey/Weidman works for companies in Russia, France and the USA, and in his restaging of Missa Brevis at the University of Utah, he performed Limon’s own role.
