The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Harlem celebrates the release of cellist Eugene Friesen and pianist Joel A. Martin’s latest work, A Perfect Sunday.
The releases include a performance in the Chapel of St. James on Sunday, February 3, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).
The newly-released album features music by Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, alongside original compositions and improvisations by Friesen and Martin.
Joel A. Martin is the creator of Jazzical®, a marriage of classical of jazz. He has collaborated with and/or written music for Grammy® Award-winners Kathleen Battle, Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jaimoe of the Allman Brothers. He has produced and played on critically acclaimed CDs by Brazilian jazz master Paul Lieberman and gospel jazz singer Jolie Rocke Brown, among many other artists.
Four-time Grammy Award-winner Eugene Friesen is active internationally as a concert and recording artist, composer, conductor, and teacher. Friesen has worked and recorded with a wide variety of artists, including Dave Brubeck, Martin Sexton, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Dar Williams, Will Ackerman, and Dream Theater. His relationship with the Cathedral dates back to the early 1980s when he began collaborating with Cathedral Artist in Residence Paul Winter as part of the Paul Winter Consort.
