The Dempsey Hovland managed the House of David basketball team in the 1930s.
Also created the New York Harlem Chicks basketball team the first all-female African-American basketball team in the USA, the female version of the Harlem Globetrotters.
The segregated Harlem Chicks barnstormed North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington State, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wyoming from 1958 to 1960.
They played teams like the and some of the teams were the Missouri Redheads, Hazel Walkers Arkansas Travelers, Philadelphia Tribune Girls, the Chicago Romas, Iowa Colored Ghosts, and the Harlem Queens who also played the Harlem Chicks.
In the photograph below the Harlem Chicks are practicing (backs turned to camera) with Judy Price in front of the Texas Cowgirls (who broke ground and opened for the Harlem Globetrotters in the 1950’S, on their tours) shooting free throws in 1959.

This was one of my father’s teams. The information is wrong and right. Those teams did not play each other they existed in separate decades. The Harlem Chic’s became the Harlem Queens in the 1960s . Both teams played against mens teams all over the United States . The photos on here are mine and you have posted both Chic’s and Harlem Queen’s team members photos . I’m happy to connect with you and help you with this. 608-207-3867. Erin
I also know a member of the harlem chic’s. Ruth is my good friend and she lives in Illinois. She loves the fact that her team is at last being recognized finally. We would like to see more info on this. I am in the middle of researching some things for her. She even has access to a few of the members still living today. Get in touch and I will tell you all you need to know about her, with her blessings….
