Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat released the following statement on his call to implement a mandatory testing protocol for all NYCHA buildings throughout New York City following recently reported cases of Legionnaires disease.
In a letter led by Rep. Espaillat in collaboration with Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer, Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, Public Advocate Letitia James, New York State Senator Brian A. Benjamin, New York State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey, New York State Assemblyman Victor M. Pichardo, New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, New York State Assemblywoman Carmen N. De La Rosa, New York State Assemblywoman Inez E. Dickens, New York State Assemblyman Al Taylor, New York State Assemblyman Robert J. Rodriguez, New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera, New York City Councilman Bill Perkins, New York City Councilwoman Diana Ayala, and New York City Councilman Mark D. Levine – leaders are calling for a more robust and proactive public health intervention to ensure the health and safety of constituents and help stop transmission of the Legionella bacteria.
“We are deeply concerned with the lack of consistent and up-to-date information from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) following reports of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents recently diagnosed with Legionnaires disease,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “For this reason, we are calling for an immediate and comprehensive testing protocol to be implemented for all NYCHA buildings in housing complexes throughout New York City. It remains imperative that the inspection and testing begin immediately to ensure the safety and well-being of NYCHA residents, our constituents, and all New Yorkers.”
