Bloomingdale School Of Music And InterSchool Orchestras Of NY Initiate Partnership

July 12, 2018

Two venerable music education nonprofits, the Bloomingdale School of Music (BSM) and InterSchool Orchestras of New York (ISO) have announced the launch of a partnership.

The partnership is designed to provide full orchestra experiences for BSM students, and chamber and private lesson opportunities for InterSchool Orchestras students.Designed to promote collaborations between these two noted organizations this new partnership strengthens ties within the musical community of Manhattan’s Upper West Side and will begin Fall 2018 continuing through to the spring 2019 semester. Both organizations are proud members of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

The planned partnership addresses needs faced by both long standing New York nonprofit music education organizations. Founded in 1972, the InterSchool Orchestras of New York provides a comprehensive youth orchestra program that allows children to perform in an ensemble of their peers. Four graded orchestras lie at the heart of ISO’s programs and the organization is centralizing its tiered orchestra system to the Upper West Side. The ISO Symphony will rehearse at the DiMenna Center.

Established in 1964, BSM is the leading school providing the Upper West side community with a comprehensive music education from its home site located in a historic Brownstone on 108th Street and Broadway. This new partnership will enable fourteen of BSM’s advanced pre professional students to enroll in an ISO large orchestra ensemble free of charge. This will replace BSM’s current small scale Chamber Orchestra while continuing to offer preparatory and intermediate orchestras.

Connecting the two groups in this manner provides a built in “feeder” system for both institutions. It will enable ISO to attract advanced and gifted music students who have demonstrated a commitment to serious study through their participation in Bloomingdale’s full scholarship pre professional program, the Music Access Program (MAP).

In exchange, ISO students will be encouraged to enhance their ISO orchestra involvement by enrolling in BSM’s multitude of lessons, classes and workshops along with attendance at the school’s vigorous free community concerts, festivals and student recitals. In addition, BSM provides much needed space to accommodate the ISO auditions and various meetings.

“We are excited to expand our orchestra offerings to students and welcome the ISO families to our community,” says Erika S. Floreska BSM’s Executive Director. “This partnership builds on the specialty areas of each organization, and we look forward to working together in expanding access to music education on the Upper West Side.”

Karen Geer ISO Executive Director had this to say. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Bloomingdale School of Music. Now all students will have a home to study privately, take theory and history classes, do chamber music so students can get a complete music education right in the neighborhood.”
