On Saturday, May 19, 2018, fifth through eighth grade students from 20 Police Athletic League centers throughout the five boroughs explored “Behavioral Science” at PAL’s 8th Annual Science Fair.
Young scientists practiced the Scientific Method and shared their knowledge through traditional tri-fold and digital presentations. In the Manhattan centers, including the Armory Center, William J. Duncan Center, Harlem Center and Polo Grounds, PAL youth answered questions such as: Can an individual pay attention to two stimuli at the same time?; Does listening to hip hop music help you focus more during homework?; Does branding play a role in decision making when purchasing a product?, and Are girls better than boys at following instructions?
At PAL’s afterschool programs across the city, children participated in hands-on scientific trials and created presentations, showcasing the outcomes at the annual Science Fair event. Volunteers awarded 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes to the top projects based on visual and oral presentations.
New York City’s Police Athletic League is the first and finest civilian-run PAL in the country. Founded in 1914, PAL has served the city’s young people for over 100 years. PAL provides recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to 35,000 boys and girls annually. It is also the city’s largest, independent, nonprofit youth organization.
