Statement from State Senator Marisol Alcántara:
As a former organizer for the New York Nurses Association, I know that collective bargaining is critical to our workforce in New York and across the nation. Next month, when the US Supreme Court hears the Janus v. AFSCME case, public-sector unions could be undermined if they lose their ability to collect dues from their members which are necessary to pay for collective bargaining.
I’m proud that my legislation to protect this right, the New York State ‘Card Check’ Act, has just passed the Civil Service and Pensions Committee.
My bill, a top priority of the AFL-CIO, establishes a uniform system for the collection of public-sector union dues, clarifying the formats dues forms can take, creating clear timelines when local government must notify their employees of their right to union representation, and streamlining the process of switching representation when employees change jobs within government.
New York has the highest unionization rate in the nation, and while I’m Chair of Labor, it will stay that way. When union density is high, workers throughout the economy benefit and everyone can prosper together from the higher wages and higher consumer spending that results.
