From uptown Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez
Within the last 48 hours, we have seen 6 pedestrians killed on our roads.
This is completely unacceptable. My prayers go out to the family and loved ones of all those lost.
I am calling on all drivers especially the truck drivers to ensure they do their part during these holidays and drive in accordance to the law. We must also be aware that larger trucks pose a greater threat to pedestrians and cyclists and they must take additional precautions while driving on the road.
Today I am announcing that I will be working with colleagues on Int. 1789 which relates to side-guards on trucks. This bill would require all large vehicles operated pursuant to a contract with the City to be equipped with side guards by January 1, 2021. I will continue conversations with the Trucking Association to ensure that they equipped their trucks with measures that will protect all cyclists and pedestrians.
Everyone has to do their part to make our streets safer, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. City contracted trucks should have side-guards to protect pedestrians and cyclists from getting trapped under the wheels.
According to one witness who saw the Soho crash, she said she could see the young lady beneath the wheels. No one deserves to go through something as horrific as what was seen in this crash. Across the City we have seen 116 pedestrian fatalities to date. We have also seen 29 cyclists killed compared to 10 from last year. This cannot continue to happen in New York City.
I would like to thank Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets who were not able to come today. They are working on a vigil happening today on 96th and 5th avenue, the scene of a recent fatality in which Dr. Cammerman a cyclist was struck and killed. He is the 29th cyclists this year to lose his life. The vigil will be at 4:30pm.
Let’s make sure all of our pedestrians and cyclists remain protected throughout these holidays.
