A great image taken on a beautiful sunny day looking west across 125th Street on Lenox Avenue, Harlem, New York, 1950’s.The photographer stands in the middle of the street as it shows retail stores Howard’s, Toby’s, and more on the dense street. As we look further west a block over to 7th Avenue (Adam Clayton Powell Blvd.,) to the left is the Hotel Theresa on the southwest corner and further down is the Apollo Theater on 125th Street.
During this time the black population in Harlem peaked with a 98% share of the population (population 233,000).
